20 October 2016 - Alternative to Violence Project
Buyile Mpungose and Marie Odendaal from the Alternative to Violence Project (AVP) kindly gave of their time to spend a very helpful afternoon with Sizabantwana talking about violence in our communities and what the AVP stands for and teaches.
The AVP offers workshops as well as facilitating Peace Clubs in schools. The purpose behind the AVP is for people to share their perceptions of violence with one another. In the context of Sizabantwana this is specifically related to how violence is affecting learning, teachers and schools, and the communities that they are in. There is a cycle of violence that is experienced and the aim of the AVP is to interrupt this cycle. South Africa has a long history of violence but there are other ways to deal with issues, violence is not the only way.
The AVP can work with adults and with children and anyone is welcome to contact them if they wish to be assisted with workshops or with implementing Peace Clubs. The website for the AVP is www.avp.international and the Peace Club curriculum material can be found at https://sites.google.com/a/zambia.mcc.org/pc-materials/home/peace-club-materials
