The original aim of the project centred around the development of educator capacity to deal with the psycho-social issues in their school communities. It was intended that these educators would become agents of change in their contexts, and would be identified as resources by other community members. This mission was to be realised through the Sizabantwana model that was developed jointly by the psychologists and educators involved in the project.
The Sizabantwana Model:
The model that was developed centred around the following principles:
Respect for the capacity of educators
Respect for the local knowledge of educators as community members (i.e. that they are experts of their own situation)
The belief that people are able to generate their own solutions
And the belief in the agency of educators in their contexts.
