Timeless Teachings in a Changing World

Sizabantwana defines community as ‘a way of being’ together and being focused on the same goal: helping children. Thus, community is not defined by a tangible place or category but rather a common passion for children. Community is a fluid and dynamic notion which varies between connections in relationships between individuals e.g. child-teacher relationships, and connections between organizations e.g. UKZN and the different schools. In essence, Sizabantwana is characterised by the notion of Ubuntu. This is best defined by the Nguni Proverb "Unmuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu," or  "A person is a person through other persons".

This definition of community is evident in every aspect of the Sizabantwana composition, mission, goals and activities. Educators are viewed as experts in their own contexts and together with their partners at UKZN they strive towards the common purpose of improving the lives of children.
